EAT RIGHT FOR YOUR SIGHT
Which foods are they and how can they improve your eyesight?
The best ones are natural, uncooked foods such as fresh fruits including apples, grapes, peaches, cherries, and plums. Green leafy vegetables such as spinach, kale, lettuce, cabbage and root vegetables as potatoes, turnips and onions and nuts should also be included.
Here is why those foods are especially helpful for the eyes.
Vitamin A is essential to maintain good eyesight because it contains the antioxidant beta carotene which maintains strong healthy eyes by aiding the transmission of light signals in the retinal cells. Vitamin A can be found in foods like carrots, cabbage, and lettuce as well as butter, eggs, fish liver oils, milk and sweet potatoes, melons, peaches, tomatoes, and red grapes. Deficiency of this vitamin can lead to night blindness.
Foods rich in vitamin C are Kiwis, oranges, spinach, and broccoli. Vitamin C is a key antioxidant that eliminates free radicals that can cause eye damage. Whole grains, avocado and turkey contain complex B vitamins. A deficiency in these vitamins can increase the risk of cataracts and retinopathy.
Soy is rich in protein and low in fat and contains essential fatty acids, vitamin E. Olive oil and corn are also sources of vitamin E. Yellow vegetables, such as carrots and squash, are important for daytime vision. Blueberries and grapes contain anthocyanins which improve night vision.
A good source of DHA is salmon, sardines, cod, mackerel, and tuna which provide structural support to cell membranes, and is recommended for dry eyes and treatment for macular degeneration. Flaxseed is high in the beneficial Omega-3 fatty acids which help lower cholesterol and stabilize cell membranes.
Here are a few more which you may not have thought about. Wine has many nutrients which protect vision, heart and blood flow. Dark chocolate has not only antioxidant benefits but contains flavanoids which protect the blood vessels of the eyes so that the cornea and lens stay strong as you age. Drinking plenty of filtered water contributes to a diet for improved eyesight.
Knowing which foods contain these essential ingredients will help us to improve our diet. Because of the way foods are grown and processed, we may not have available to us the most desirable foods. Therefore many use natural herbs, vitamins and minerals as well and follow an eye exercise program.
